Advice: 〜ほうがいいです

Giving advice with ほうがいいです
AdviceFormExample
You should …past short form (た) + ほうがいいです薬を飲んだほうがいいですよ。くすりを のんだ ほうが いいですよ。 (You should take medicine.)
You shouldn’t …ない form + ほうがいいですお酒を飲まないほうがいいですよ。おさけを のまない ほうが いいですよ。 (You shouldn’t drink alcohol.)
The tricky part

For “should,” use the past form (飲んだ), even though the advice is about now or the future. For “shouldn’t,” use the present ない form (飲まない), not 飲まなかった.

はやく ねた ほうが いいですよ。You should go to bed early.
びょういんに いった ほうが いいですよ。You should go to the hospital.
あまり むりしない ほうが いいですよ。You shouldn’t push yourself too hard.

Adding よ at the end makes the advice sound kind and natural.

Must: 〜なければいけません

Saying what you must do with なければいけません

Take the ない form, change ない to なければ, and add いけません. Literally, “if I don’t do it, it’s no good.”

ない formmust doMeaning
行かないいかない行かなければいけませんいかなければ いけませんI must go
食べないたべない食べなければいけませんたべなければ いけませんI must eat
しないしないしなければいけませんしなければ いけませんI must do
しゅくだいを しなければ いけません。I have to do my homework.
あしたは ろくじに おきなければ いけません。I have to get up at six tomorrow.
きのうは はたらかなければ いけませんでした。I had to work yesterday.
In conversation

People often shorten it to 〜なきゃいけない or just 〜なきゃ: もう行かなきゃ (I have to go now). You may also hear 〜なければなりません, which is more formal.

Too much: 〜すぎる

Saying “too much” with すぎる

すぎる means “too much.” Attach it to a verb stem or an adjective. すぎる itself is a る-verb (すぎます, すぎました).

TypeRuleExample
verbdrop ます + すぎる食べすぎましたたべすぎました (I ate too much.)
い-adjectivedrop い + すぎるこの部屋は狭すぎますこのへやは せますぎます (This room is too small.)
な-adjectivedrop な + すぎるこの町は静かすぎますこのまちは しずかすぎます (This town is too quiet.)
きのう、おさけを のみすぎました。I drank too much yesterday.
この かばんは たかすぎます。This bag is too expensive.
ゲームを しすぎない ほうが いいですよ。You shouldn’t play games too much.
いい is special

いい becomes よすぎる: 天気がよすぎて、勉強したくない (The weather is too nice to study).

Put it together

Combine the patterns with から and ので to give complete advice.

きょうは さむすぎるから、コートを きた ほうが いいですよ。It’s too cold today, so you should wear a coat.
あした テストが あるので、べんきょうしなければ いけません。I have a test tomorrow, so I have to study.
おかしを たべすぎない ほうが いいですよ。からだに わるいですから。You shouldn’t eat too many sweets. They’re bad for your health.

Final check: 10 questions

These questions mix everything from Lesson 12. Get 8 or more right, and you are ready for potential verbs in Lesson 13.
